Going off half-cocked

Boy, oh boy!!!
Some of the expressions we use, eh?

And the emotions they evoke.

Last week's newsletter had a subject line that elicited more responses than we've received in a long time. The first and some others were positive responses, enjoying the video article and encouraging me to "keep up the good work" and observing that I'm "having a blast".

Some people were upset, however, from the subject line and they clicked "reply" to let us know that, too.

Feedback is so valuable! How often do you receive feedback ... good, bad or indifferent? It's from the feedback that we know what's happening in our prospective clients' worlds.

"Half-cocked" is another cute expression and I just wonder how many people know its meaning. IMAGINE the results when a gun goes off when it's only half-cocked.

I was actually receiving feedback on last week's subject line over the phone today.
He asked: What's with that subject line?
I responded: It came from the video. Did you watch the video?
Response: No.
Perfect example of "going off half-cocked." Instead, drawing conclusions and making assumptions without getting to the bottom of it.
(Did you miss last week's video? Click here to watch it now.)

Here is today's exercise: I encourage you to keep track (in a little shirt-pocket-sized notebook) of every time you, your employees and even your customers draw conclusions and respond negatively to something without gathering the information necessary to have a clear understanding.

Awareness is more than half the battle, my clients frequently hear me say. Once you become aware of how often people in your business are "going off half-cocked" you can make sure your business is fully-cocked, aimed and reaching its targets.

By the way ... last week's subject line that caused such a raucous was viewed by many more people than usual. Proves a tactic of one of my marketing trainers is as effective as he says it is. :-)

How can you stir things up in your marketing?
